Something interesting happens when artists work together.

Ideas are shared, thoughts are provoked—there’s a mutual, reciprocal inspiration that occurs naturally between two creatives who typically create in a solitary sphere. It’s silent and subconscious, but there’s an inherent understanding that exists between two like minds.

The same thing happens with any like-minded people, I suppose—artists, athletes, professionals. I focus my business primarily on commercial photography, working with other small business owners and the like because it’s extremely important to me to work with people who are building something they are passionate about, and to help them grow that something, whether it’s a business, a brand, a product, a service, or a career. It reminds me why the something that I pour my own heart and soul into is meaningful.

So when Amy asked me to shoot her and her work for her upcoming exhibit, I was excited. Amy and I completed a studio art fellowship together 10 years ago at Trinity College in Hartford. I’ve always enjoyed working with her and admired her work. Since then we’ve both moved on to other jobs, relocated to various other cities, and kept casually posted on each other’s lives via social media feeds. But here we both were again, a decade later, and I couldn’t have been more thrilled to get to work with her again.

Amy’s current work finds its basis in home renovation and the idea of play, so it resonated with me immediately. Her careful craftsmanship and attention to detail are as evident in her work as they are in her meticulously organized tool board. I was glad to have been able to come while her main installation piece for her upcoming exhibit was still a work in progress—the magic is in the making, after all.

Her new exhibit, 16 on Center, opens at Boston Sculptors Gallery in Boston, MA next month, and if you’re in the area you shouldn’t miss it. The show will run from August 29 to September 30, with a reception on September 15 from 5 – 8pm.
